Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education (CETE, TISS) with support from UNICEF, India have launched a 21st Century Professional Development programme for Teacher Educators and Teachers on ‘Constructive Teaching & Learning with Technology’. The programme is being implemented in 10 Indian states, in collaboration with respective state governments, with the aim to equip educators with skills to leverage technology for enhanced education delivery inside and outside the classroom.

CLIx 3.0 - Mizoram - Support Unit for Integration of Technology in Education MZ-SUITE)
CLIx 3.0 MZ-SUITE focuses on Mizoram, a hilly border state with 94.43% of its population belonging to Scheduled Tribes. Despite its 91.58% literacy rate, the exposure to technology in education has been minimal, impacting its youth’s ability to participate in the 21st century digital knowledge economy. CLIx 3.0 MZ-SUITE, builds on the learnings of our ongoing engagement in Mizoram since 2015. Connected Learning Initiative (CLIx) an award-winning field action research project was funded by Tata Trusts and led by Tata Institute to Social Sciences, India and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. It focused on developing and deploying OERs that work offline (available freely at https://clixoer.tiss.edu) for government high school students in underserved communities, in Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Telangana (see https://clix.tiss.edu). Developed along the three guiding principles of creating a safe space for learning from mistakes, leveraging peer collaboration by facilitating the social aspect of learning and creating opportunities for authentic and relevant holistic learning that go beyond scholastic learning outcomes and focus on 21st century skills focused upon now in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, CLIx won the prestigious UNESCO 2017 King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the field of Education and the Open Collaboration Award for Excellence 2019 awarded by the Open Education Consortium. The state is trying to catch up to the need for a thrust on EdTech and has begun work on creating resources, training teachers and improving infrastructure available, especially in the pandemic era. MZ-SUITE aims to collaborate with existing state institutions and support their work and enhance skills and advocating at policy level, will enable us to truly impact student learning
Connected Learning Initiative 2.0 (CLIx 2.0)
The Connected Learning Initiative (CLIx), is a collaborative project working to strengthen the ecosystem for quality in education in India. CLIx is a multi-state, multi-partner initiative seeded by the Tata Trusts, and led in phase 1(2015-2020) by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, INDIA (TISS) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA (MIT). CLIx is now in phase 2 of its journey and the Tata Trusts continue to be our anchor partner in this new phase. CLIx aims to improve teaching, teacher professional development and student learning through the use of ICT-enabled Open Education Resources (OER), and thoughtful use of interactive technologies. Driven by the Tata Trusts’ commitment to serving disadvantaged communities in India, CLIx draws on MIT’s leadership in platform-based, blended-learning and interactive technologies in education, and TISS’ experience of impactful field action programs for underserved and marginalized communities in school and teacher education to ensure equitable access to educational technology and opportunities to improve learning outcomes. CLIx won the prestigious 2017 UNESCO-King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Education for its outstanding contribution to the theme “Use of ICT to Increase Access to Quality Education’’. In 2019, CLIx was awarded the Open Education Consortium’s OER Collaboration Award for Excellence.

Criminal Justice Fellowship Programme (2015-2019)

iCALL - Initiating Concern for All, is a pioneering and an empowering mental health project which was started in 2012 by School of Human Ecology, TISS - Mumbai. iCALL endeavours to provide professional and free counseling via telephone, email and chat to anyone in need of emotional support, irrespective of age, gender, sexual orientation or race, and transcending geographical distances while ensuring confidentiality.

Inclusive Community Based Rehabilitation” (iCBR) project began through a fellowship program instituted by Tata Institute of Social Sciences during its Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2011 wherein fellowships were provided to graduated students to support them in undertaking innovative interventions in the field. Mission ANKUR: Madhya Pradesh NIPUN Professionals (MPNP)
The Madhya Pradesh NIPUN Professionals Program aims to strengthen the implementation of Mission Ankur by enlisting 52 young and dynamic professionals to work with the district administration. They will serve as catalysts for driving mission implementation and resolving complex challenges in the education system. The program is a collaboration between GoMP and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai. It provides a unique two-year, full-time, paid experiential opportunity to lead large-scale systemic reforms and achieve foundational learning goals in Madhya Pradesh. The Madhya Pradesh (MP) Government, as part of the NIPUN Bharat mission, aims to ensure that all children in the state achieve foundational learning goals by 2026-27. As part of the program, the NIPUN Professionals, in the age group of 22-32, will be deployed across 52 districts in the state and will act as a change catalyst in bringing long-term, efficient reforms within the system. These fellows will play an instrumental and transformational role in achieving the goals set by the government, with the government. Tata Institute of Social Sciences supports the process of hiring the above mentioned fellows, build capacity for their intended role and mentor them through the programme period.

Prayas
Prayas is a social work demonstration project of the Center for Criminology and Justice, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, established in 1990. Prayas focus is on service delivery, networking, training, research and documentation, and policy change with respect to the custodial/institutional rights and rehabilitation of socio-economically vulnerable individuals and groups. To this end, permission to visit criminal justice or custodial institutions and interact with persons detained or confined in police stations, prisons and government residential institutions in Maharashtra and Gujarat has been obtained from the Departments of Prisons and Women and Child Development.

Technology Based School Interventions in Assam (CLIx English, Assam)
CLIx English focuses on Platform-based Learning, Blended Learning, and Peer Learning. Students learn different methods to connect with peers and experts. The course design allows them to provide positive feedback in peer reviews and receive immediate feedback through digital tools. The highlight of the CLIx English module is that the students themselves lead the way in communication, collaboration and determining the pace of their lessons. The proposed English modules for the State of Assam, CLIx program in Assam, is a two-course module- ‘English Beginner’ (EBU00 and EBU01) and ‘English Elementary’ (EEU01 and EEU02), with a community of practice (CoP-English) for teachers of the 100 schools this intervention touches. Tata Trusts grant will be released to its Associate organization, Centre for Microfinance & Livelihood (CML), Guwahati. CML shall implement the program. TISS is the technical partner, providing technical support for implementing the CLIx program, as part of the larger program.

Telangana IFP OER Curation Project
The Telangana IFP OER Curation project aims to leverage pedagogical affordances of Interactive Flat Panel(IFP) devices in the classrooms to enhance the quality of interactions, inclusivity and overall pedagogy in the schools. To achieve this, digital Open Educational Resources (OER) are to be curated for all the subjects in the grades 8th, 9th and 10th mapped to the textbook. The project aims to curate more than 500 OER across seven subjects for the grades 8th, 9th and 10th. These OERs will be integrated in classroom teaching in more than 4000 secondary schools across Telangana state. As a collaborative project between State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Govt. of Telangana and TISS, the curation process involves experts from TISS, SCERT and external subject matter experts (SMEs) and vetted by a quality control (QC) panel.

Trafficking in Persons: Addressing Women and Children’s Risk from Enhanced Regional Connectivity in Assam and Mizoram
World Bank has commissioned a research study on ‘Traffcicking in Persons: Addressing Women and Children’s Risk from Enhanced Regional Connectivity in Assam and Mizoram’ to Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, to assess the risks associated with safety and security of women and children, arising out of improved connectivity and labour influx. The task also includes developing tools for assessment and capacity building of project team and other key stakeholders. The scope of the study is confined to the on-going World Bank funded projects in Assam and Mizoram.
