Legal Awareness on the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act

Nukkad Natak by LL.M Students as a part of Clinical Legal Fieldwork, SLRCG

Venue: Mazagaon Metropolitan Magistrate Court & City Civil and Session Court Mumbai.

 

On 4th November, 2025, Eight (8) LL.M Students of Master of Laws in Access to Justice at School of Law, Rights & Constitutional Governance, (SLRCG), TISS, Mumbai performed a  Nukkad Natak in two crucial Government Legal Institutions, firstly at the Mazagaon Metropolitan Magistrate Court, in the forenoon and secondly, during the afternoon at the City Civil and Session Court Mumbai.

light of the significant judgment from the Bombay High Court (Aurangabad Bench), in Pramodwaman Rao Dhule vs State of Maharashtra, (Bail Application No. 740 of 2025). The  Court has issued landmark directions to the Law Enforcement Authorities, Government, Statutory Bodies, District Legal Services Authority,  as their obligation to remove the menace of rising drug de addiction in the society especially among the vulnerable sections of society including the accused, arrested individuals, detained persons in judicial – police custody, undertrials, convicts, inmates in, prison- in all state run reform and custodial institutions, towards promoting their welfare. This reinforces the NALSA, Drug Awareness Wellness Navigation (DAWN ) Scheme 2025.

The skit was preceded by an insightful session by Dr. Sonali Kusum Assistant Professor, Law TISS, Mumbai,  on the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS)Act, 1985 with the objective to spread awareness on the NDPS Act, including a detailed overview of the Act, with emphasis on sentencing, bail and stringent sanctions under the Act, along with contemporary judgements on the same.  

The legal awareness session and nukkad natak embodied a community-centric approach, educating the society and conveying a noble message to the broader community. This is as per the guidelines issued by the UGC Community Fostered Education 2019. 

This is organised by the DLSA Mumbai, DLSA Suburban Mumbai as a part of clinical legal field work. This was coordinated and supported by the respected Registrar of the City Civil Sessions Court, Mumbai. Under the able guidance of Hon’ble Principal Session Judge, City Civil -Sessions Court, Mumbai. 

This event was attended by around 120 – 125 participants, including the Inmates, accused being taken to court, Chief Public Prosecutor of the City Civil & Sessions Court, Mumbai, Public Prosecutor officers, advocates, law-judicial officers, Clerks, Staff, Police Officers, and Para Legal Volunteers (PLV)s from the DLSA Mumbai.
