Consultation on Review of State-Specific Laws in Collaboration with Maharashtra State Commission for Women & SLRCG,TISS,Mumbai
The National Commission for Women (NCW), in collaboration with the Maharashtra State Commission for Women (MSCW), with School of Law, Rights & Constitutional Governance (SLRCG), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is organising “Consultation on Review of State-Specific Laws” on 5th October 2026 at the S. Parasuraman Hall, ( 6th floor), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai.
The objective of “Consultation on Review of State-Specific Laws” are to raise awareness and facilitating meaningful discussion on laws, legal gaps, implementation challenges, coordination, reforms and provisions concerning women.
The proposed themes for the consultation are:
The Consultation was chaired by Hon’ble Smt. Vijaya Rahatkar, Chairperson, National Commission for Women. The deliberation involved focused engagements in the field of women’s rights, particularly rights relating to property and agricultural land, the Commission would be honoured to have you participate in the program. The sessions delved into the valuable insights, practical experience and guidance on the legal rights of women, existing legal provisions, challenges in their implementation and possible areas requiring review would greatly benefit the participants and contribute meaningfully to the consultation.
The consultation was addressed by senior advocates, resource persons Hon’ble Judges from different the District legal Services Authority, Shri Ravindra Phansalkar, Shri Mukhul Chithale, Shri Vivek Deshmukh and Shri Praveen Kumbhojkar, along with Senior Advocates Shri Puneet Chaturvedi and Smt. Rupali Gothwal, and TISS faculty, Dr. Sonali Kusum, Assistant Professor and Programme Coordinator SLRCG, TISS, referred to legal provisions implementation gaps, Court procedures -trials and out of court amicable dispute resolution process along with contemporary and significant Bombay High Court Judgment, Priya Tanaji Kumbhar & Ors. v. State of Maharashtra (2026) , Hemant Gamanlal Mehta v. State of Maharashtra (2022) which dealt with the vulnerabilities faced by elderly persons, particularly widowed women and the need for legal remedies for the same.
The consultation was attended by around 210 participants including advocates, from Civil – Session Court Mumbai, Public prosecutors, Para Legal volunteers from DLSA Mumbai and College students- Faculties from various law colleges, Civil Society organizations and Law Enforcement Agencies.
The consultation concluded with a shared commitment to bridge the gap between legislative intent and implementation, ensuring that women senior citizens can access their legal rights with dignity, security, and timely justice.
