About the Program: With rapid economic growth and urbanization, with increase in globalization and trade and with growing inequities between nations and within nations, public health has become more of a challenge than ever before. Public health or the health of populations is the outcome of health systems, which are a composite of the organization of clinical health care services, preventive and promotive health care, and action on the social determinants of health. Health systems are complex adaptive systems whose evolution is influenced by their own path of development, the socio-cultural and economic contexts in which they evolve and the influence wielded by different stakeholders. Studying health systems across national contexts helps understand now only how health systems have evolved in other nations; it also makes us reflect on our own health systems with fresh eyes.
