Dr. Manoj Joseph is associated with the School of Rural Development at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Tuljapur, Maharashtra. His core areas of teaching and research focus on disability and development, rural social work practices, and community engagement. He holds an MA in Social Work from the University of Pune, an M.Phil from the University of Delhi, and a Doctorate from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.
Before joining TISS, Dr. Manoj served as a Research Coordinator for a project on ethnic conflict in India at the Indian Social Institute, New Delhi, and as a Research Assistant for a study on the impact of climate change on health at the National Physical Laboratory, CSIR, New Delhi. He has also worked as a Research Officer at the Center for Research, Planning, and Action in New Delhi and as a Programme Coordinator for the Gujarat Earthquake Relief & Rehabilitation Project by BUILD, Mumbai.
Dr. Manoj has been the recipient of prestigious scholarships, including the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship from the University of Lund, Sweden, and the Linnaeus Palme Scholarship from the University of Gävle, Sweden.
In addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Manoj has contributed to curriculum development for various academic programs. He has been involved in the development of the MA Social Work in Rural Development at the TISS Tuljapur campus, the MA Social Work in Disability Studies and Action at Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, and the MA Rural Development Programme at Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar University, Solapur. He is also a member of the Board of Studies at TISS Tuljapur and the Board of Studies for the School of Rural Development at Ahilyadevi Holkar University, Solapur.
Dr. Manoj Joseph’s research focuses on the intersection of social work and community engagement, with a particular emphasis on rural and marginalized populations. His doctoral work examines the dynamics of caregiving within community settings, specifically how families and social networks support individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.
His engagement in disability studies emphasizes advocacy for the inclusion and meaningful participation of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of community life. This includes his field engagements in inclusive education, where he develops strategies to create accessible learning environments for students with disabilities.
Dr. Manoj is also interested in research on disability and disaster management, exploring how disaster preparedness and response efforts can be made more inclusive to safeguard the well-being of vulnerable populations during emergencies.

Completed Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR)-funded research project titled "Long-Term Care of Adults with Developmental Disabilities" (Project No. 02/89/2019-2020/MN/ICSSR/RP). This research focuses on exploring the lived experiences of parents who provide long-term care for adult children with developmental disabilities. The study is situated in the rural villages of the Marathwada region in Maharashtra, aiming to understand the challenges, coping mechanisms, and socio-cultural factors influencing caregiving practices in these communities.
