Josephine Anthony is currently, an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Equity and Justice for Children and Families. Her field of practice and research include Vulnerable and Marginalized Children, Researching with Children and other Vulnerable Populations, and Technology and Society. She primarily focuses on the issues of adolescent children for research and practice.
Since 2018, Josephine has been leading a field action project she established as a psychosocial intervention for children in Child Care Institutions in Hyderabad, under the Department of Juvenile Welfare, Correctional Services and Welfare of Street Children (JWCS), Government of Telangana. Currently, the project is known as Aapyayata (Affection), which integrates the earlier projects- ROOTS (Rehabilitation Oriented Opportunities Towards Social reintegration) of Children in Childcare Institutions, and Rekkalu 'Rehabilitation of Adolescents in CCIs through Skilling and Vocational Education'. The project aims to provide comprehensive rehabilitation of children in CCIs, from 'entry to exit'- normalising trauma, stabilising them emotionally, providing education and skilling and eliciting aspirations for their future. The project also engages with the CCI staff and the JJ System of Government of Telangana.
Josephine has led several research projects including 'Educational Status of Children during Post-tsunami in Tamil Nadu', 'Coping Patterns of Persons with Disabilities during tsunami in Tamil Nadu', 'Parents’ Participation in Children’s Education (PPCE Project) - An Impact Study', 'Educational Status of Migrant Children in Pune and Delhi', 'Status of Women and Children among Scheduled Tribes in Rajasthan' and 'Childcare Institutions in Hyderabad. Josephine co-led the 'SARASWATI' project for TISS, which was the task leader for Social and Institutional Evaluation of Waste Water Management, an FP7 EU-India project, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
Josephine has published in prominent international journals and contributed chapters to academic books. She was a recipient of Linnaeus-Palme Fellowship and taught at the University of Gävle, Sweden (2015). Before joining TISS, Josephine worked for nearly a decade as a social work practitioner and a researcher in urban and rural Tamil Nadu in India, and also, worked as an autism therapist in the United States for about three years.
