Dr. Emon Nandi is an Assistant Professor at the Centre of Excellence in Teacher Education (CETE) at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, India. Her teaching and research interests lie in the areas of Economics of Education, Education and Development and Higher Education. Currently, she is part of the TISS research team working on Innovative Finances for Education To Leave No One Behind (IFE-2-LNOB). Emon had received the Knowledge to Action mobility grant in 2024 and the Fulbright-Nehru Post-doctoral Fellowship in 2021 and worked at Boston College, MA, USA during 2021-22. Before that, she was working as an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Regulatory Policy and Governance, School of Habitat Studies, TISS, Mumbai. Prior to shifting to teaching, she worked as a Senior Research Coordinator at the Centre for Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in TISS and handled monitoring and evaluation of CSR funded projects in the social development sector. Prior to this, she worked as an Assistant Professor in Economics on in a government-aided college in West Bengal in India from 2014 to 2016. She had also worked in multinational research projects including Equalities for Public-Private Partnerships (EQUIPPPS) in education funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, UK. Currently, Emon is serving as an Executive Member of Comparative Education Society of India (CESI). Apart from work, Emon loves to travel, cook and paint.

Emon's research interests lie in the broader area of economics of education, education policy, and the interlinkages between education and devlopment. Her focus area is of contemporary issues and challenges related to education financing, education policy and Higher Education in India.

In her doctoral thesis, she looks at the relationship between the mode of funding and the process of delivering quality in higher educational institutes.

Currently, Emon is part of the research team involved in a study "Estimating Requirements for the 21st Century Schooling in India", commissioned by the NITI Aayog. The purpose of this research is to develop a roadmap for 21st-century schooling for the next 3 decades, using a multi-pronged approach guided by the normative framework of 21st-century schooling- keeping the following ones in mind– demographic changes in the next 2 decades, skills needed in the future labour market, impact of technology & Artificial Intelligence on teachers and students, climate change and mental health, and, inclusive and sustainable education.

Emon had conducted extensive research on Innovative Financing in Education To Leave No One Behind (IFE-2-LNOB) at the CETE, TISS, Mumbai. The research projects aimed at understanding how innovative financing mechanisms can improve efficiency, ensure effectiveness and bring in additional fundings in education sectos in India and in other countrues.

Emon has also worked in multinational research projects such as Public-Private Partnerships co-ordinated by the Equalities in Public Private Partnerships (EQUIPPPS) and funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), and aother project on Indian higher education led by Prof. Simon Marginson (Director, Centre for Global Higher Education, UCL Institute of Education) and co-ordinated by the British Council, New Delhi.

During her tenure as a Senior Programme Officer at the National Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Hub in Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, India, she guided public and private sector companies in formulating (CSR) policies aligned to their business frameworks and in creating and implementing their CSR programmes in a sustainable way. She also conducted monitoring and evaluation of social development projects funded by CSR.

Emon had conducted research on Innovative Finances for Education To Leave No One Behind (IFE-2-LNOB). The IFE-2-Leave No One Behind project will fund the implementation (through matching funds from consortium partners) and conduct impact evaluation research on 1) – Lending for Education in Africa (LEAP), Impact Bond Innovation Fund (IBIF), Quality Education India (QEI) Development Impact Bond, and two additional upcoming initiatives – implemented by UBS Optimus Foundation (UBS OF) and Volta Capital in Ghana, India, Kenya, Rwanda, Sierra Leonne, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. The three university partners – Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies – NORRAG (IHEID-NORRAG) in Geneva, University of Cape Town-Graduate School of Business (UCT-GSB) in Cape Town, and Tata Institute of Social Sciences – Centre for Education Innovation and Action Research (TISS-CEIAR) in Mumbai – will conduct mixed-method impact research on which and under what conditions do innovative finance mechanisms, arrangements, and programme elements are likely to produce educational benefits for vulnerable and marginalised student populations.
