Public Lecture on “Community Forensics & Access to Justice”

The public lecture on “Community Forensics & Access to Justice” was jointly organized by the School of Law, Rights & Constitutional Governance ( SLRCG) & the School of Development Studies (SDS), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai on 11th January, 2024 at S.Parasuraman Hall, Main Campus, TISS, Mumbai.

The public lecture was organized to mark the celebration of two major academic developments in TISS Mumbai.
Firstly, the auspices signing of Memorandum of Understanding ( MOU) between the Uttar Pradesh State Institute of Forensic Sciences ( UPSIFS), Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (U.P).
Secondly, the appointment of Dr. G.K Goswami as the “Distinguished Professor of Law” in SLRCG, TISS, Mumbai.
The public lecture was convened with the objective to impart a conceptual understanding on the emerging and dynamic concept of “ Community Forensics” in the arena of Forensic Sciences & allied forensic tools. The public lecture is a part of the Viksit Bharat 2047 mission of developing India to promote good governance through application forensic technology in criminal investigation leading to fair investigation, fair trial, fair justice.
In the light of the recent, “Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, in lieu of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1973, (replacing the colonial Indian Penal Code of 1860 , Criminal Procedure Code,1973 ) under section 176(3), which made the forensic examination mandatory for offences punishable with seven years. This legal obligation makes the knowledge about forensics a pertinent necessity not only for the lawyers, judges, prosecutors but also for civil society.
The lecture was presided by the Deans of both SLRCG and SDS.
The Dean, SLRCG, Prof. ( Dr.) Arvind Tiwari, provided the contemporary context and relevance to this public lecture in the present scenario in India. He highlighted the objective of public lecture as to provide forensic - aid as a part of legal aid for legal and judicial compliance. Thus, he set the tone for the public lecture.

The Dean SDS, Prof. ( Dr.) Ashwini Kumar, presented an interesting bio- sketch of Dr. Goswami and encouraged the students to learn from his knowledge and skills.

Dr. Goswami conceptualized forensics as “reasonable and scientific, verifiable means of investigation, research , which may be applied in any discipline of study including industrial processes.
Dr. Goswami elaborated on the existing legislations in India bearing upon forensic in India. Dr. Goswami threw light on allied disciplines of forensics as forensics in day to day lives like forensic in missing and search cases, forensics in crimes against women and children, and also, forensic in banking sectors, forensics in conduct and management of elections among others.
At the outset, the public lecture was anchored and coordinated by Dr. Sonali Kusum, Assistant Professor SLRCG, TISS, Mumbai.
The lecture was very well received by the participants, students, faculties , staff both offline i.e physically and online.
