South Asian Conference on Statelessness

Archived

Venue: Library Conference Hall, TISS, Mumbai

Statelessness is a profound violation of human rights of an individual and remains to be one of the most pressing humanitarian and human right issues of the twenty-first century. Article 15 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights clearly states that

  1. “Everyone has the right to a nationality" and that
  2. “No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality.."

Despite this guarantee, people in all parts of the world face the prospect of living without a nationality or citizenship. The exact number of stateless people is still unknown, but UNHCR estimates that there are at least 12 million stateless globally but official data is available for 3.5 million only. In 2014, the UNHCR announced its Campaign to end Statelessness in ten years. The same year, the Institute on Statelessness and Inclusion reported that more people in Asia and the Pacific are affected by statelessness than in any other regions of the world.
