TISS Guwahati has been set up at the behest of the government of Assam and the Ministry of Department of North East Region, Government of India. TISS Guwahati has been contributing to the development sector in the North East through a well-conceived Diploma Programme in Community Organisation and Development Practice since June 2009.
TISS Guwahati has commenced offering the Five Year Integrated Masters programme since 2012 along with two years Masters degree programme in Social Work with various specialisations.
The campus space is equipped with a cyber library, conference hall, and classrooms with provisions for video conferencing. Student hostels separately for men and women are available. These are managed and maintained by TISS. A full fledged campus is being established on 24.5 acres of land located within the Assam Engineering College campus at Jalukbari.
Recent Achievements
2006 The North Eastern Regional Centre was established at Guwahati. Apart from short term trainings on research, community mobilisation, gender, a diploma on community organization and development practice, which was designed to build capacities of grassroots development practitioners was introduced and three batches of over 100 students graduated successfully from this programme over the year
2008 The Government of Assam invited the TISS to establish a campus in Assam. There was a regional consultation where committees with senior faculty members from TISS Mumbai visited all the states of northeast and TISS Campus in Guwahati was established.
Government of Assam awarded 24.5 acres of land to the TISS to build the campus;
2010 The foundation stone for the campus was laid by the Chief Minister of Assam Shri Tarun Gogoi and Mr. Krishna Kumar the then Chairperson of the Institute in the presence of Mr. Ratan Tata.
2011 UGC gave permission to set up the off campus of TISS in Guwahati.
2012 A Landmark year for TISS Guwahati
Academic Programmes were launched in TISS Guwahati in a public function presided by Shri Ramadorai, Chairperson TISS Governing Board, the Chief Minister of Assam along with the Education Minister, DONER Minister and Union Minister for Rural Development.
Academic programmes started with two Masters Degree Programmes:
A significant year for the campus
Government of India sanctioned Rs.100 crore in the Union Budget for infrastructure development.
Direct Ph.D. and integrated M.Phil.-Ph.D. programmes in Social Sciences were started.
A new M.A. Programme in Labour Studies and Social Security (renamed as M.A. in Labour Studies and Social Protection in 2014) was introduced.
Four specialisations were introduced within Social Work programme: Community Organization and Development Practice, Counselling, Livelihoods and Social Entrepreneurship, and Public Health.
2014 The campus introduced a new M.A. programme in Peace and Conflict Studies.
2015 A disciplinary M.A. programme in Sociology and Social Anthropology was also introduced.
2016 NAAC reaccredited TISS in February with a score of 3.89 out of 4 (in the third cycle), which is the second highest score of universities accredited so far.
