After obtaining her Psychology degree from the University of Delhi, she embarked on an academic journey, earning her M.A. in Social Work from TISS and further pursuing a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Community Health, specialising in Violence and Health, from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
With a career spanning almost three decades, with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in 1996, she assumed a faculty role within the former Department of Criminology and Correctional Administration. Throughout her career, she has dedicated herself to addressing vital issues at the intersection of justice and public health.
In the justice field, her focus extends to structural violence, security concerns, human rights, development, criminal justice policies, and the pivotal role of social work within the criminal justice system. She has significantly contributed to combating trafficking, advocating for child rights, child protection, and reforming juvenile justice. In addition to her substantial contributions to the fields mentioned, she has extensive work experience in Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE), particularly in family violence/separation and child labour. In her current endeavours, she is actively researching and studying the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Criminal Justice, emphasising trafficking and child abuse.
Her instrumental founding role in establishing the Resource Cell for Juvenile Justice (RCJJ) field action project underscores her unwavering dedication and adeptness in addressing formidable challenges. Furthermore, her substantial contribution as faculty support for the PRAYAS, also a field action project until 2004, attests to her skill in fostering and nurturing impactful initiatives.
In public health, her research covers topics like Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), political economy, advocacy, menstrual rights and the intricate dynamics of structural violence. Her interdisciplinary approach allows her to explore the interconnectedness of these issues.
Frequently invited to train at police academies, child rights organisations, and initiatives addressing violence against women and access to justice, along with being a visiting faculty at Gothenburg University in Sweden, guest faculty at law colleges [for Human Rights and Criminology], serving on Board of Studies highlights her ability to integrate academic insights with practical applications and vice-versa
Her active involvement as a founding Council Member for the State Coaching Council at the Women’s Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WICCI) underscores her commitment to fostering growth and empowerment. She holds the position as an Executive Council member at the Indian Police Foundation, the first think tank on Policing in India, demonstrating her role in shaping and advancing key initiatives.
Her prolific research seamlessly traverses the intersections of justice, public health, and human rights, presenting innovative insights and solutions. This trajectory showcases her versatility, underlined by an intersectoral perspective and a pragmatic approach. With her multidisciplinary expertise, dedication to justice, and contributions to public health, she aims to foster positive change through sustainable development.
