Ranu Jain holds the position of Professor and Chairperson at the Centre for Studies in Sociology of Education, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, India. She is a sociologist with several years of teaching and research experience in Sociology of Education, Sociology of Minority, ethnicity and related fields like communalism, secularism, minority-majority dynamics, and multiculturalism. Her research interests include policies on minorities and social inequalities in education. She has worked on ghettoization, Jain and Muslim religious groups, communalism, communal harmony, and peace education. The work is now expanding to include Christians.
She has carried out many independent and collaborative research which include analysis of Artiles 29 and 30 of the Constitution of India, studies on Muslims in Mumbai and Mumbra, an ethnographic study of a school; research on higher education and education policies. She has published many research papers. She has conducted many projects including an action project, ‘Towards Communal Harmony’. She has published a book namely, Education for Peace, for the front-line workers. Along with her regular responsibilities of teaching and research supervision, Dr Jain is a member of many e-networks as well as an NGO called Centre for Study of Society and Secularism, Mumbai. She is also in the advisory board of many academic journals.
Prof. Jain was a member of the Study Group constituted by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for comprehending backwardness among Muslims in Maharashtra. She also worked on a paper for the Ranganatha Mishra Commission.

Sociology of Education, Sociology of Minority, ethnicity and related fields like communalism, secularism, minority-majority dynamics, and multiculturalism. Research interests include policies on minorities and social inequalities in education, ghettoization, Jain and Muslim religious groups, communal harmony, and peace education.
