Anil Kumar is currently Professor at the Centre for Health as Social Sciences, School of Health Systems Studies (SHSS), Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. He was the Dean of the School of Health Systems Studies from 2018 to 21. He was the Chairperson of the Centre for Health and Social Sciences from 2006 to 2008 and between 2010 to 12. Also, he was the chairperson of the Centre for Hospital Management from 2019 to 21. Before becoming a Professor in 2008, he worked with the Institute as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Associate Professor. Before joining TISS in 1991, Anil Kumar worked as a Research Officer (Demographer) with the ICMR-HRRC at the SAT Hospital, Medical College, Trivandrum from 1987 to 1991.
Anil Kumar has completed his MSc in Demography with First Rank from the University of Kerala and completed his PhD in Population Studies from the International Institute of Population Sciences. His Ph.D. topic was "Development-Fertility Interactions: A Study of Travancore-Cochin and Malabar Regions in Kerala State". He qualified for the UGC Junior Research Fellowship in 1986. Anil Kumar was a Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics and Politics in 2008.
Anil Kumar has undertaken several research projects spanning a wide range of topics related to health and development. He has worked extensively on the health of children, adolescents, and youth in both urban and rural areas. In addition, he has worked on sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, and Migration and Health. Recent research interests include health and wellness among the elderly, the association between adult nutrition and health, health services system challenges in low-resource settings, and occupational health.
