The Centre for Library and Information Management Studies (CLIMS) offers a Master of Library and Information Science (MLISc), a Post-Graduate Diploma in Digital Library and Information Management (PGDLIM) and PhD programmes in the Library and Information Science field. Master's programme in Library and Information Science (MLISc) is being offered since 2013 with an intake of 20 students. Post-Graduate Diploma in Digital Library and Information Management (PGDLIM) was launched in 2010 with intake of 25 students. The Ph.D programme has been offered since 2012, and currently, 15 research scholars, including 3 Junior Research Fellows (JRF), are pursuing a Ph.D in library and information science at the centre.

The CLIMS will provide extensive training in modern library administration, classification and ontology, cataloguing and metadata, digital libraries, content creation and management, web-based information services, etc. Besides excellent academic exposure, the students are also provided with a unique learning experience through practical lab sessions and field-based internships. The students will be able to develop a strong orientation towards research, analysis and practice. They will be trained to perform in any sector, such as academic and research libraries, corporate libraries and information centres, publishers and content providers, NGOs, schools, public libraries, museums, archives, etc.

1. Master of Library and Information Science (MLISc):

The Master of Library and Information Science (MLISc) programme comprises 15 disciplinary core courses, 1 compulsory foundation, 1 elective foundation, 1 open elective, 1 disciplinary elective, 1 internship programme, and a dissertation for 66 credits in four semesters.

The MLIS programme incorporates theory and practicals that include concepts from foundations to new and emerging library trends like digital libraries, knowledge management, content creation and management, classification, cataloguing and metadata, web ontologies, taxonomy, information seeking and research behaviours, etc, over the four semesters of the programme. Internship that begins in the second semester is supervised by fieldwork supervisors and faculty from the CLIMS. The MLISc research has covered diverse areas, such as scientometric-based studies, digital library applications, content management systems, information literacy, etc.

Courses: The courses are conducted through lectures, tutorials, brainstorming and laboratory sessions. The courses that require hands-on experience are held at the SDTM Library and the state-of-the-art Computer Lab (Terminal Room), which is well equipped with 20 Desktops with internet access.

Internship: In the first year, students are placed on a month-long internship at a major university library, corporate library, or special library to learn in real situations. This helps them apply their theoretical knowledge to practical situations under the supervision of a faculty and field supervisor and enhances their understanding and problem-solving skills.

Research: Each student compulsorily takes up a research project and works for an year under the guidance of a faculty supervisor. This will hone his/her research skills. This helps students to read the new trends in library and information sciences. The student focuses on comprehensively understanding the issue/problem chosen and emphasises providing recommendations for implementing action plans. Some of the major areas of research attempted by students are traditional knowledge repositories, scientometrics, library education, metadata harvesting, cataloguing and resource discovery, open access and intellectual property rights, research data management, open science, electronic resource management, web technology, etc.

2. Post Graduate Diploma in Digital Library and Information Management (PGDLIM):

Post-Graduate Diploma in Digital Library and Information Management (PGDLIM) was the first academic programme launched by SDTM Library in 2010 with intake of 25 students. This is a one-year, two-semester dual-mode course with 36 credits. It is being offered through a combination of contact classes and online learning through the MOODLE e-learning platform. Selection is through the interview process. This programme is recognised by the Distance Education Board of the University Grants Commission, New Delhi.

Much emphasis is given in this course on the integration of research, communication, and education on a digital platform. The programme is unique in its curriculum, content, and delivery; no other university in India offers it. It is doing well and attracts candidates from across India from organisations like NGOs, school libraries, public libraries, academics, research institutes, and corporations.

Programme Description:

The contact classes (12 days) are held twice at the Mumbai campus of TISS during October/November (First Semester) and then again during May/June (Second Semester). Teaching–learning in the rest of the days will be carried out based on planned weekly readings and regular assignments, primarily through web-based learning platform like MOODLE.

3. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD):

A direct PhD in Library and Information Science has been offered since April 2012. Selection is conducted through a Research Aptitude Test (RAT) and Personal Interview, with intake determined by the number of vacant seats available. Up to 2023, fourteen PhDs have been awarded. Currently, 15 research scholars, including 3 Junior Research Fellows (JRF), are pursuing their PhD in Library and Information Science at the center.
