School of Gender Studies was set up in June 2014 with the introduction of the MA in Women’s Studies programme. By then the Hyderabad campus was also offering the Integrated M.Phil-PhD in Women’s Studies and the PhD in Women’s Studies programmes.

Since the 1980s when Women’s Studies was first introduced as an academic discipline, its purpose has been to revitalize higher education in particular by bringing social issues closer, to generate new knowledge about women and gender relations, to work towards analysis and solutions to gender inequalities through research and documentation, and to facilitate the process of examining and reflecting on attitudes of bias and stereotypes.

It is in line with these original objectives of Women’s Studies as well as of the core commitment of TISS to promotion of equitable, sustainable and participatory development and social justice that the School was established in the Hyderabad campus. Drawing upon a broad range of disciplinary approaches to the study of women and gender, the School through its Master’s and doctoral programmes, research and outreach projects, aims to promote gender sensitivity, equality and equity.

The courses aim to provide the students with the conceptual frameworks and methodological approaches to the study of gender. The Experiential Learning and Internships components provide students with hands-on experience in understanding and analysis of issues and concerns of gender intersecting with state policies and programmes and social institutions.

A key Field Action project of the School is the Sakhi One Stop Centres, set up in all 33 districts of the state of Telangana, for providing a range of services to women and girls affected by different forms of gender-based violence. Established in collaboration with the Department of Women Development and Child Welfare, Govt of Telangana, the role of the School is to serve as a knowledge partner for conducting training and capacity building programmes, and monitoring and evaluation of the Centres.

Faculty are engaged in wide-ranging research projects such as conditional cash transfers and child marriage, women’s collectives for addressing gender-based violence, perceptions of child abuse, and trafficking of women, to name just a few.
