The School of Media and Cultural Studies (SMCS) is all set to host the 10th Cut.In Students' Film Festival on the 15th and 16th of December, 2017. The venue is the Old Conference Hall, Main Campus, TISS, Sion-Trombay Road, opposite Deonar Bus Depot, Mumbai and film festival is open to the public.This year the festival received close to 90 entries from students of diploma, graduate and post graduate programmes in film and media institutions across India. Of these 24 films from 9 institutions will be screened at the festival in the competition section. The student filmmakers have been invited to attend, and there will be a Q&A session after the screening of each film. The trailers of some of the selected films are available here.

The festival will also premiere, in the non competition section, a series of five films titled Mumbai Streets, made by the students of the School of Media and Cultural Studies. This series engages with the complexity of Mumbai streets and with marginal voices. The films explore various interactions of the life in the city with its streets - from an enquiry into the relationship that photographers have with the streets and people that they photograph, to the ways in which visually impaired individuals negotiate with streets and public utilities; from an examination of the everyday struggles of inhabitants of the street, to documenting the life and work of six artists who sell their artwork outside the Jehangir Art Gallery, and the redevelopment of Chor Bazaar. Also in the non-competition section, the festival will screen two films that are funded by the SMCS Early Career Fellowship. The fellowship is designed to provide the resources and environment for films and multimedia projects that are innovative, relevant and contribute to the growing body of documentary film work in India. A Foreigner In My Own Land is a self-reflexive film in which the filmmaker, herself an Asameli Nepali / Gorkha, explores the notion of identity of the community in Assam. Kahan Ka Raasta (At The Crossroads) examines the transformations that result from the laying of a motorable road to Kalap, a village nestled in the Himalayan range of Uttarakhand

This national level festival aims to encourage talent among students across the country.  Currently in its tenth edition, it is the longest running students' film festival. The festival seeks to address a felt need for a platform where student work can be showcased and discussed. Two prizes, consisting of a trophy and a citation, will be given in each category of Documentary and Short Fiction. In addition there are technical awards for Cinematography, Editing and Sound Design.
