MS Gore Centenary Conference – 18, 19, 20 December TISS 2021

School of Development Studies @ TISS- Mumbai invites you to join the M.S. Gore Centenary Conference on “Exploring Grassroots Governance in India” on December 18-20, 2021. The Centenary Conference for MS Gore is being organized in collaboration with Research Scholars Forum in the School of Development Studies at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.

Prof. M.S. Gore (August 15, 1921 - November 19, 2010) was a celebrated social scientist, academic, and writer. He was also an eminent alumnus of TISS and the longest- serving director of Tata Institute of Social Sciences from 1962-1982. Among many prestigious academic positions, he also held the position of chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Vice-Chancellor of Mumbai University. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan for his outstanding contributions to social sciences and developing the discipline of social work in the country.

Through this conference, we celebrate life and works of Prof. MS Gore and we also aim to provide an exciting interdisciplinary platform for our doctoral research scholars and also  generation -next researchers to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions adopted in the fields of governance with the focus on the interactions between state and citizens in various parts of the country specially at the grassroots level in multiple areas like health, education, rural development, climate, environment, water, sanitation, social protection schemes including community -based innovative practices. District -level research is quite poorly articulated and there is not much recognition of best practices of governance at the sub-national level.

We are happy to inform you that Shri Tripurari Sharan, Chief Secretary of Bihar has consented to inaugurate the conference & Prof. Vibha Dhawan, Director General of TERI will deliver the inaugural key-note address and reputed policy maker Dr Shekhar Bonu, Director General of NITI Aayog, and eminent scholars like Prof. Anirudh Krishna from Duke University, Prof. RB Bhagat(IIPS), Prof. Priya Deshingkhar and Prof. Lyla Mehta from University of Sussex will be participating in our conference. Also, the conference has received enthusiastic support from Prof. Surinder Jaswal, Deputy Director and Prof. Shahjahan, Dean, Academic Affairs as well as Deputy Directors of Guwahati TISS, Hyderabad TISS and Tuljapur campus and Deans from various schools and the faculty at TISS Mumbai campus.
