The event will begin with an introduction to the concept, features and potentials for digital badges, and will ask the question: ‘how can digital badges be used in teacher education?’. An interactive workshop session will invite participants to then discuss ideas and explore steps in the badge design process, including relating this to learning outcomes and types of assessment, and the challenges in operationalising digital badges. TISS teacher educators will describe two practical examples of pilot applications of digital badges and the course leads and learners will be invited to reflect on the impact of digital badges on the interrogation of practice, motivation and future plans. A concluding plenary session will draw on these experiences to explore future possibilities for digital badges in teacher education. A short optional post-event activity will offer hands-on training to familiarise participants with the process of receiving and sharing digital badges, using a specially created demonstration badge for this purpose.

Please note that a second day (Day Two) is also planned, which will build on the conversations and experiences shared on Day One. However this will be by invitation only. A summary of discussions conducted on Day Two will be made available to all Day One participants.

Setting the scene

Digital badges offer a valuable combination of pedagogic flexibility, scalability, local adaptability, and user portability. Of interest is how these affordances can be used to support Teacher Professional Development (TPD) in India. Examination of teacher education programmes across the globe reveals few details on how teachers’ learning is assessed and recognised. There are even fewer examples of how deepening engagement as a teacher arising from TPD is shared with others, be they fellow teachers, school leaders, parents, school management committees and employers. TPD is usually recognised with a Certification of Completion or Participation, with little or no information on how these relate to the teacher’s practice.
