'The effect of Same Language Subtitling (SLS) on developing reading skills in school going children'

by Dr Aarti Punjabi

Abstract

This research is in the area of English Language Teaching (ELT) and explores the effect of Same Language Subtitling (SLS) on developing reading skills in school going children. SLS involves subtitling of popular songs, stories, movies and so on in the same language. When the text is sub-titled and words appear synchronically with the actor’s/ character’s voice, the viewer subconsciously links the spoken word to the written word. This later helps them to read and recognize the letters of the alphabet and then words and sentences. The study concerns itself with the primary question: Does the use of Same Language Subtitling help primary and secondary school children in acquiring language skills? It is hypothesized that teaching through task-based activities linked with Same Language Subtitling will lead to far greater improvement in language skills than through focusing on grammatical and lexical and forms. The objective of the research is to see how subtitling movies and songs can engage the young reader visually, and how this exposure to written word along with audio- support can help them find a link between the spoken and the written word.
