With antecedents in the protests by socialist and women's groups in New York in 1908, Copenhagen in 1910, and later in other parts of Europe and Russia, the first International Women's Day was instituted by the UN General Assembly on March 8th, 1975. This took place following multiple struggles by women's movements around issues of civil, political, social and economic rights related to questions of suffrage, the right to hold public office, sex discrimination in employment and more. Consequently the period 1976-1985 was announced as the United Nations Decade for Women: Equality, Development and Peace to implement a 10 year World Plan of Action for the Advancement of Women. Since then, the UN has worked alongside different women's groups and movements around the world to promote women's rights in multiple spheres including but not limited to the equality, population policies, sexual and gender-based violence, Millenium Development Goals, peace and security and LGBTQIA+ rights. In this backdrop, highlighting the role of UN in working for promoting women’s rights across the globe, Ms. Sanya Seth is going to share with us her experiences of being a member of UN Women Office. Ms. Sanya Seth is the Programme Lead for Intergovernmental Processes and Women, Peace and Security across India, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka.
