The M.S. Gore Policy Research Group, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, is pleased to invite you to a guest lecture by Prof. Shiv Visvanathan on ‘Middle Class and Indian Democracy’, as part of the Prof. Rajni Kothari Memorial Lecture Series.

The M.S. Gore Policy Research Group is a student forum for policy-related research and advocacy at the Centre for Public Policy, Habitat & Human Development, School of Development Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences.

This is the next exciting session of a lecture series dedicated to the legendary Prof. Rajni Kothari, the intellectual, author, activist and teacher who has inspired an entire generation of political scientists and activists. Prof. Kothari’s works such as Caste in Indian Politics, and Politics in India have reshaped the field of political science in this country.

Shiv Visvanathan is Professor and Director, Centre for Study of Knowledge Systems, Jindal Global Law School. He was Professor, Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DA-IICT), Gandhinagar, India and was Senior Fellow Center for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) in Delhi. He has taught at the Delhi School of Economics and held visiting faculty at Smith College, Stanford, Goldsmiths, Arizona State University and Maastricht University.

Along with numerous academic papers, Prof. Visvanathan has authored of Organizing for Science, A Carnival for Science, and has co-edited Foulplay: Chronicles of Corruption. He has been consultant to the National Council of Churches and Business India. An anthropologist and human rights researcher, his work has explored the question of alternatives as a dialogue between the West and India. His writings have explored the psychological, cultural and political relations of science; the growing control of society by technology; and linkages between scientific establishment and authoritarian structures of state.
