Three-way urban labs conversation on spatial practices and critical mapping

Representatives from the Beirut Urban Lab, Karachi Urban Lab and Hyderabad Urban Lab participate in a 3-way conversation on their experiences in using spatial practices and critical mapping to make the city’s land and other resources more accessible and inclusive. The discussion will also be centred around modes and pedagogies of working – the explorations, connections and collaborations the lab as site enables in the city context.

Speakers:
Bhashwati Sengupta is the Director of Hyderabad Urban Lab. As an evolving experiment in urban research, Hyderabad Urban Lab has been developing collaborative projects involving media professionals, planners, technologists, academic researchers and legal professionals. These broad based collaborations are key to deepening our understanding of the very large informal economies that underpin contemporary cities.

Mona Fawaz is Professor in Urban Studies and Planning at the American University of Beirut. She is a co-founder and research lead at the Beirut Urban Lab at the American University of Beirut, a regional research center invested in working towards more inclusive, just, and viable cities. Mona’s research spans across urban history and historiography, social and spatial justice, informality and the law, land, housing, property and space, as well as planning practice, theory and pedagogy.

Nausheen Anwar is Director, Karachi Urban Lab & Professor of City & Regional Planning, in the School of Economics & Social Sciences (SESS), Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi. She received her PhD from the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation (GSAPP), Columbia University, USA. Nausheen’s work focuses on the politics of urban planning, climate change and infrastructural development in the Global South.

Anchor: Anant Maringanti is the executive director of Hyderabad Urban Lab Foundation. His research and teaching interests centre on questions of urbanization and globalization from the South Asian vantage point.

This is a collaborative effort between the Centre for Urban Policy and Governance, TISS Mumbai and Omidyar Network India. The purpose of the series is to create interdisciplinary dialogue amongst academic scholars and practitioners, activists and policymakers with a focus on:

●contemporary developments related to, and ongoing experiments in, making land and housing more accessible and inclusive.
●addressing themes related to land rights for marginalised urban groups, issues and challenges of real estatization, the commons as a way of contesting the commodification of land, and formal and informal land markets in the Global South, and theorizing land and social relations around land.
