Humanitarian Response in Conflict: A three day training workshop in collaboration with ICRC

Archived

Dec. 2, 2016 - Dec. 4, 2016

Venue: Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai

Conflicts much like natural disasters impact the vulnerable groups the most, subjecting them to more severe circumstances for sustenance and shattering their coping capacity. Preparing the community to tackle conflict situations, respecting the human rights values and improving the resilience of the social and physical infrastructure to mitigate the effect of conflicts is important. With these objectives in mind, a three day training workshop is being organized which aims to facilitate critical reflection on conflict related complexities. In most of the academic institutes, the focus of study is on examining conflict situations from a third person's perspective with very limited emphasis on the practical complexities practitioners face on the ground. To address this gap, Jamsetji Tata School of Disaster Management and International Committee of the Red Cross are organizing a training workshop on different facets of conflict management.

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences has been working extensively on exploring conflict as a disaster to the students of Disaster Management and is oriented to study issues of conflict management and processes of peace building. ICRC has been a pioneer in chartering the evolution of International Humanitarian Law across the world and has wide experience of conducting trainings. It has also been working in numerous conflict torn areas and has done tremendous exemplary humanitarian work with special emphasis on rehabilitation as well.

This training workshop is meant for practitioners interested in or working with institutions involved in conflict. Students and scholars with some background in Conflict Resolution, Disaster Management, International Humanitarian Law or International Relations are welcome to apply. Students pursuing post-graduation courses associated with International Humanitarian Law or International Relations will be able to appreciate the practical inputs. Young faculty members and Ph.D scholars may find the course and the pedagogy of considerable relevance.
