We start the DM Week with a PUBLIC LECTURE BY DR. MADHAVAN NAIR RAJEEVAN, Distinguished Scientist with the Ministry of Earth Sciences, who retired as Secretary to the Government of India Ministry of Earth Sciences. Dr. Madhavan will be speaking on the SCIENCE OF NATURAL DISASTERS.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Dr. Madhavan holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Pune. After working briefly at TIFR, Mumbai, he joined the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in 1986. After working for IMD for 23 years, he moved to the Dept of Space in 2008 as a senior scientist. He joined the Ministry of Earth Sciences as an Advisor in Feb 2012. In March 2015, he was appointed as the Director of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology in Pune.

In December 2015, he was appointed Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Earth Sciences. After serving as Secretary for about five and a half years, he retired from government service in July 2021.

Dr Rajeevan is known for his significant contributions in tropical meteorological research. He made significant research contributions in the areas of monsoon variability and forecasting, climate change, extreme weather events, mesoscale convective systems and satellite data applications. He developed many forecasting tools and data products that IMD uses for operational use. During his tenure as Secretary, he launched many new initiatives to improve weather and climate services in the country, especially to develop advanced forecasting systems. He also led the launch of the Blue Economy and Arctic Policies and the ambitious Deep Ocean Mission.

He has published over 170 research papers with an h-index of 56 and 15,000 citations. He has so far supervised 10 PhD students in atmospheric sciences.

Dr Rajeevan is a Fellow of all three Science Academies of India and a member of the International Academy of Astronautics, Paris. He is currently an expert member of the Research Board of UN /World
Meteorological Organisation (WMO), Geneva.
