A Handbook on the Legal Process for the Police in respect of Crimes against Children

Child rights, especially in the context of justice delivery to children who are victims of crime or are vulnerable to exploitation, assumes a national priority. We have several laws, court rulings, administrative rules, policies, programmes, schemes, etc. The existing scenario, despite best efforts from Government and other stakeholders, remains a matter of concern. One of the requirements in this context is to facilitate, promote, support and strengthen the respondents, statutory and others, to deliver their best in every process of justice delivery. An essential tool in this direction, is a process-oriented Charter on Child Rights, which is user friendly, self-contained and compact. It is in this context, that we have envisaged the book titled ‘A Handbook on the Legal Process for the Police in respect of Crimes against Children’.\

This book is a reference tool and guide book for all law enforcement agencies, justice delivery agencies and all stakeholders who are working on the issues of child victims as well as children in difficult situations. The work was commenced in May, 2017 and was completed in June, 2018. The team working on this handbook consisted of experts with vast experience in the field of child rights. The team consisted of Dr. PM Nair, IPS (Retd.), Dr. Geeta Sekhon, Ms. Swagata Raha, Ms. Shruthi Ramakrishnan and Ms. Sumati Thusoo. The project is supported by Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF).

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in collaboration with the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) launched A Handbook on the Legal Processes for the Police in respect of Crimes Against Children on 19th June, 2018. The book was launched by Smt. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Women and Child Development. The handbook is being translated in Hindi and Telugu.
